Minidoka County Court History
Minidoka's courthouse history gives local context for today's District Court. The first Board of County Commissioners minutes are dated February 10, 1913, and the first court case was filed July 26, 1913. Rupert became the permanent county seat after a 1914 election. Voters approved a courthouse in February 1916, Rupert donated Block 26 of the original town site the next month, and officials moved into the new courthouse in June 1917.
The Sherman J. Bellwood Judicial Building was built in 1974 for about $400,000, largely with federal revenue funds, and the county history says it provides all facilities for the court system. The older 1917 courthouse exterior changed very little, while the interior has been remodeled many times. The history also notes growth in court volume, from a few early cases in 1913 and 1914 to more than one thousand criminal cases by 2000.
